Twitter Software – Which One To Choose?

by Twit_Expert

One of the best ways to enhance your experience on Twitter is through Twitter Software. However, this is more commonly called Twitter Applications or Apps for short. It’s been more than 3 years since Twitter came online and since then, literally hundreds, if not thousands of applications have been developed to improve the experience of twits (people who use Twitter) the world over.

The burning question is: which one/s do I choose?

My hope is that this article can in some way help you cut through all the clutter so that you can make a wise and informed decision about Twitter Software.

How To Choose The Right App

Before choosing an application to use, you first have to ask yourself: why do I want to use an app?

This is an important question to ask because many people get into the trap of choosing to use Twitter Software just because everyone else is using them. This is certainly not the right way to approach it because before you know it, you will start using an application and have no idea why you chose it or what it actually does.

There are many reasons why people would want to use an app. You may be Using Twitter For Business and need tools to make this happen. Or you may just have a lot of accounts and need to find a way to manage them more efficiently. But the most important thing is that you define your “why” before going out to find a suitable application.

Some Software Suggestions

I find that the reasons why people look for an application can be divided in 5 categories. These are listed below along with some suggestions of Twitter Software.

  • Following – A lot of people are looking to make the following process more automated so that it consumes less time. 2 great Twitter Tools for automating the following process are Twollow and Tweet Spinner. Both these services allow you to follow by keyword.
  • Unfollowing – By the same token, you may want to automate the unfollowing process. It is certainly frustrating and time-consuming to do this manually. 2 useful tools for Twitter Karma and Huitter.
  • Tweets – Perhaps you are looking to programming your tweets so that you don’t have to be in front of the computer screen when you want to tweet. A great Twitter App for this is Tweetlater.
  • Multiple Accounts – If you are regular user of Twitter, then you may have more than 1 account. Logging in and logging out of different accounts is certainly not an efficient of managing them. The best tool out there to manage all your accounts from 1 interface is TweetDeck.
  • Phone – So you’ve got a brand new phone and want to start tweeting messages from wherever you are. You cannot do this without adding an application to your phone. If you are using a Blackberry, then TwitterBerry is highly recommended. If you are using an iPhone, then Tweetie is probably the best one for you.

There may be other reasons why you might be looking for Twitter Software, however, I tend to find that the above categories are by far the main ones.

One Stop Shop For Twitter Tools

In the previous section, I covered the most popular and widely used Twitter applications, yet they only represent a tiny percentage of all apps out there on the Web. There are others which I didn’t cover, which may certainly interest you.

For that reason, I’ve created a Twitter Apps Guide, where I review every Twitter Application I’ve used and comment on how it can benefit you. The purpose of this guide is to create a one stop shop for information on Twitter applications. I’m continually adding to the guide as I explore and use more applications so expect to see more pages in the future.

The most important thing is to always have a set goal in mind whenever you are looking for Twitter Software.
